SimpleScience@Heart: Most pre-packaged meals, snacks for toddlers contain too much salt

Published: 3:00 pm CDT, March 21, 2013

Nearly 75 percent of commercial pre-packaged meals and savory snacks for toddlers are high in sodium, according to a new study.

Some toddler meals had as much as 630 mg of sodium per serving — about 40 percent of the 1,500 mg daily limit the American Heart Association recommends. A product was high in sodium if it had more than 210 mg per serving.

A salty diet may train your child’s palate to prefer saltiness — and could lead to long-term health issues. So read nutrition facts labels to choose healthier foods for your children.

Sodium is in regular table salt and many foods.
