SimpleScience@Heart- Men: Breakfast is important for your heart

Here’s another reason for men to believe the old saying about breakfast being the most important meal of the day: New research shows that men who skip breakfast may be more likely to have a heart attack or die from coronary heart disease than men who don’t.

The study also offers a stiff warning for those who eat in the wee hours, specifically people who wake up to snack in the middle of the night.

The information is reported in the American Heart Association journal Circulation and the numbers are jarring:

  • Men who reported regularly skipping breakfast were 27-percent more likely to have a heart attack or die from coronary heart disease than men who didn’t.
  • Men who eat late at night, especially interrupting sleep to eat, were 55-percent more likely to get heart disease than those who didn’t.

What you eat for breakfast – or, if you must, for a midnight snack – can be a factor, too. Starting your day with a healthy balance of nutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals is always a good idea.
