SimpleScience@Heart: If you were a preemie, beware possible heart problem

People who were born prematurely should pay special attention to their heart health.

A study published in the American Heart Association journal, Circulation, found that young adults who were born more than a month early were more likely to have problems in the right side of their hearts. And the earlier they were born, the more severe the problem might be.

The right lower heart chamber, called the right ventricle, had reduced pumping capacity, was smaller and had heavier and thicker walls in preemies compared to their full-term counterparts.

Researchers are trying to figure out what causes these changes in order to give preemies specific advice about their cardiovascular risks.
