Seven may be your lucky number when it comes to reducing stroke risk.
For every extra seven grams of fiber people added to their daily diet, their risk of having a stroke decreased by 7 percent, according to a new study. That means about half a cup of whole wheat pasta plus two servings of fruits or vegetables can improve your odds of avoiding a stroke.
The American Heart Association recommends eating 25 grams a day. But most people don’t. You can get the right amount by eating six to eight servings of grains and eight to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Dietary fiber is the part of the plant that the body doesn’t absorb during digestion. Fiber can be soluble, which means it dissolves in water, or insoluble. Dietary fiber can also help keep cholesterol down.
