Simple Science @Heart: Vitamin D-rich foods may lower stroke risk in Japanese-Americans

More milk, salmon, egg yolks and other foods rich in vitamin D could lower your chances of having a stroke.

According to a recent study, Japanese-American men who consumed such foods were less likely to suffer from stroke later in life. In fact, those who did not report eating foods high in vitamin D were 22 percent more likely to have a stroke, the researchers found.

As we get older, it becomes harder for our bodies to get enough vitamin D from the sun, so foods rich in it are important to a heart healthy diet.

Some good options include low-fat or fat-free fortified milk, breakfast cereals, fatty fish and egg yolks. Eggs also provide cholesterol, which should be limited to 300 milligrams a day.
