Reporting program certification to award incentives for healthcare improvements

The Guidelines Advantage, a healthcare improvement reporting program, was awarded a certification that allows doctors to use it to report quality information to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The program, a collaboration of the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association, was certified on Friday and targets the nation’s most chronic health conditions with the goal of improving prevention and treatment for outpatients.

Healthcare providers use the program to share data and compare their practices to regional and national benchmarks. More than 481,000 patients have been seen in more than 70 practices since January 2013.

The federal designation means healthcare providers who participate in the program do not have to submit multiple reports on their quality information and upload the data to different systems.

“This new designation means less reporting requirements for healthcare providers, reducing the burden on these practices and allowing them to focus their time and energies on improving patient care,” said Mary Ann Bauman, M.D., chairperson of The Guideline Advantage committee. “Now the responsibility for submitting quality measures or information to these key reporting systems falls to the program, not the physician.”

In addition, the new designation means:

  • Providers are eligible for government incentives for reporting their data;
  • Doctors can more easily submit for incentives allowed under the Medicare Part B program;
  • Any provider who uses electronic health records can participate;
  • Providers can submit their information through health insurers.
