Overweight stigma may spur more weight gain

People who experience discrimination due to their weight are 2.5 times more likely to become or stay obese afterward, according to a study published in the online journal Plos One. 

“In the case of weight discrimination, people often rationalize that it is OK to do because it will motivate the victim to lose weight,” said lead researcher Angelina Sutin, an assistant professor of psychology at Florida State University. “Our findings suggest the opposite.”
